Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting held 1st October 2006
By Keryn CollinsWhen signing-on was accompanied by horrendously wet and thundery weather, it appeared this meeting might not even start. However, it quickly dried up, and the day finished with three heats, finals, and opens for perpetual trophies. The weather caused the track to be a little rough, in spite of the work carried out on it during the day, but the racing was excellent.
Class 1 saw Jason Saunders (WS11) heading brother Kevin (SS69), and stretching out a lead when Kevin had to defend his position from Keith Westlake (SS79). There was a terrific scrap for the lead in Class 3, where Wayne Thresher (SS67) and Ian Fay (WS5) battled together the entire race. Nicholas Emms (R320) finished ahead of Joe Hills (WS500).
Classes 5 and 7 had their own races today, and in Class 5, Neil Daniels (WS19) won all his heats and the final. In the final, he had to hold off Rob Walters (G3D), who passed Jonathon Griffiths (A27) for second, and then challenged Neil for the win. Alan Henschker (G19D) won all the Class 7 heats, but his wheelie off the line in the final allowed Mike Collins (WS61) to take up the lead which he maintained for the rest of the race.
Craig Tovey (SS23) was the man to beat in Class 2, taking the win ahead of Nathan Nicholls (SS16) and Craig Atyeo (SS80). Classes 4 and 6 ran together, with only one Class 6 car lasting to the final. Ray Tudgay (WS23) took the early lead, but a mistake dropped him down the field, allowing Dave Blackman (WS29) to take the win. Dieter Dehmel (SS99), out in Class 6 for the first time today, was unable to pass Ray.
All the specials raced together today, but unfortunately, due to getting ready for my own races I didn't see any of their racing - apologies! However, Ian Stott (WS56) was the sole finisher in Class 8, and new member Simon Raymond (WS221) finished ahead of Roger Lillington (SS47), racing Class 9 instead of Class 6 today. Chris Ellis (SS6) brought his Class 10 car home ahead of Tony Tanswell (WS25).
Due to the unusual race order, I also didn't see any of the Juniors racing, so apologies them, too. However, Josh Brooks (NR15) took the win ahead of Marcus Cole's well-turned out A222 car. George Young (SS21), in the League's only Citroen AX Class 1 car, took third.
Only three cars survived to the ladies' final, which saw Keryn Collins (WS61) holding off Claire Blackman (WS29) for the win from the straight-line start. Lisa Fay (WS500) finished third.

Meeting held 10th September 2006
By Keryn CollinsThis was one of the best meetings held at Bearley, partly due to the number of visiting drivers, so thank you all very much. It was also good to see so many lady drivers this weekend.
There was plenty of on-track action, particularly in Class 1, which saw James Taylor (WS241) take the lead. Behind him, Ryan Bennett (WS68), Jason Saunders (WS11) and Dougie Atkins (SS40) all battled for second, with Ryan receiving a black flag for a challenge on Jason which put him out of the race. Justin Hardy (SS1) joined the action, overtaking Dougie for second.
The Class 3 cars found the track somewhat slippery, with early leader Adrian Joyce (WS22) spinning himself out of the lead. Ian Fay (WS5) slid into the armco but later rejoined the race, with future son-in-law Joe Hills (WS500) also spinning. Laurence Blaber (A13) made the most of it to take the win, with Hugh King (E214) putting in a steady drive to finish third.
Classes 5 and 7 raced together, with John Gay's car being driven by three different people today, and possibly Russ Shepherd driving it in the final. Russ (SS7) led from Geoff Gibbs (H595), with Neil Daniels (WS19) putting in a hard challenge on Russ the entire race. Stuart Clamp (NR28) moved up to third as Geoff Gibbs dropped off the pace. Kevin Saunders (SS90), still getting used to rear-wheel drive, came home third in Class 5.
Classes 9 and 10 raced together, with only three cars remaining for the final. Nigel Candy (S14D) was the early leader, until Allan Tovey (SS18) passed him, and Nigel later spun himself down to third. Tony Tanswell (WS25) in the sole remaining Class 10, moved up to second place overall.
Class 2 saw plenty of action, with an initial three-way battle for the lead between Nathan Nicholls (SS16), Craig Tovey (SS23) and Wayne Field (NR18) being resolved eventually in Craig's favour. As Craig stretched out a lead, Wayne dropped down the field, leaving space for Sam James (SS37) to challenge Nathan for second.
Classes 4 and 6 raced separately today, and among the Class 4 cars, Dave Blackman (WS29) took the lead from Mike Nicholls (NR72) and these two eventually pulled away from Ray Tudgay (WS23). However, Ray's car completed the final, the second time the car has finished an entire race! Class 6 saw Roger Lillington (SS5) and Nick Cleal (SS4) resuming their battle for the lead, followed by Adrian Kinchen (WS31).
Class 8 was a good race, with Dan Hasker (WS8) taking the early lead and maintaining it for the race. Ian Stott (WS56) attempted to pass him, but later spun himself down the field. Derek Dyke (WS30) drove steadily and moved up to second after Ian's spin. John Gay shared Russ Shepherd's SS3 car, which, with John presumably driving in the final, came home in third place.
The Juniors' race saw a win for Jim Winchester (SS140) ahead of Josh Brooks (NR15) and Leon Parnell (SS22). Leon later lost his boot lid, earning a black flag, and this allowed Marcus Cole (A222) to move up to third.
There were separate races for ladies in unmodified and modified cars. Jo Moore (SS69) took the win in the unmodified race from Clarissa Dallinger (SS32) and Christine Stott (SS40). Vicky Hatch (WS81) was unable to make up the stagger. In the modified race, Claire Blackman (WS29) was the initial leader, until Laura Atyeo (NR72) overtook her. Jax Clamp moved up to third in her Class 5 (NR28) car.Full results:
Class 1: 1st WS241 James Taylor, 2nd SS1 Justin Hardy, 3rd SS40 Dougie Atkins.

Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting held 23 July 2006
By Keryn CollinsThis meeting unfortunately turned out to be poorly supported; however there was plenty of on-track action to entertain spectators.
Class 1 saw a good battle between Jason Saunders (WS11) and Dougie Atkins (SS40), and behind them, Justin Hardy (SS1) had to fend off Darren Parkin (SS32).
Class 3 saw Wayne Thresher (SS67) take the win, ahead of Ian Fay (WS5), who raced side-by-side with Adrian Joyce (WS22) to move up from third to second.
Classes 7, 9 and 10 all raced together, with Chris Ellis (SS6) in Class 10 leading to the corner. Martin Gaylard (WS9) quickly passed him in his class 9 car to take the race win. John Gay (SS7) overtook Chris to take second but was unable to catch Martin.
Class 2 saw a lot of place changing, with Nathan Nicholls (SS16) leading the race until Ryan Napier (WS81) raced alongside him for an entire lap to take the win. Nathan then dropped out with a puncture, allowing Craig Atyeo (SS80) up to second. Jon Napier (WS83) held third until a last corner break-down, leaving Sam James (SS77) to take the place.
Classes 4 and 6 raced together, with the Class 4 car of Dave Blackman (WS29) chasing Adrian Kinchen (WS31) in his Class 6. Ahead of them, Nick Cleal (SS4) held off a determined Roger Lillington (SS5).
Dan Hasker (WS8) led the Class 8s into the corner, but later had to surrender the win to John Dexter (NR11). Ian Stott (WS56) had a good battle with Graham Orchard (WS94) before making third place his own.
Leon Parnell (SS22) was the early leader among the Juniors, but Bobby Phillips (NR9) was not settling for second, and quickly took the win away. Leon was more successful in holding off Scott Atkins (SS40) to take second place. Ben Court (WS93J) made the final in his Junior Special.
All the lady drivers raced together on a staggered start. Vicky Hatch (WS81) soon made up the distance in her Class 2 to take the win away from Clarissa Dallinger in her Class 1 car (SS32). Claire Blackman in the Class 4 WS29 overtook Lisa Fay (WS500) to catch and pass Clarissa but was unable to catch Vicky.Full results:

Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting held on 24&25th June 2006
By Keryn Collins
Saturday's "fun day" drew in a reasonable number of drivers, who were split up into various heats of open racing. Unfortunately no lady racers signed on this afternoon. Points were accumulated over the heats, and the top points scorers later took part in a final. The cars were drawn at random in the heats and given staggered starts around the track.Finalists were: Class 1: SS32 Darren Parkin, WS241 James Taylor; Class 2: SS80 Craig Atyeo, SS247 Wayne James; Class 3: WS5 Ian Fay; Class 5: WS26 Jon Napier; Class 6: WS17 Steve Ford; Class 7: SN274 Paul Bennett; Class 8: WS56 Ian Stott, WS8 Dan Hasker; Class 10: R177 Ken Page, WS202 Shaun Wheeler, R181 Fred Jupe. Ian Fay was the only driver unbeaten in the heats. Unfortunately Shaun Wheeler retired before the race was started.
James Taylor led the final from start to finish, with Ian Fay charging hard in pursuit but not quite able to catch him. Ian Stott followed Ian Fay, but again ran out of laps, having to settle for third.
The juniors had four sets of heats, but no final, the trophies going to the drivers who scored the most points over the heats. Marcus Cole, Aimée Conbeer, and Scott Atkins were the leading points-scorers. Later in the day there was also a Junior open, which saw the leading places going to Leon Parnell, George Young and Oliver Ayles. Ben Court in the Southern League's sole Junior Special was not quite able to catch these three.
Full results were:
Juniors: 1st A222 Marcus Cole, 2nd A22 Aimée Conbeer, 3rd SS40 Scott Atkins.
Seniors Open: 1st WS241 James Taylor, 2nd WS5 Ian Fay, 3rd WS56 Ian Stott.
Juniors Open: 1st SS22 Leon Parnell, 2nd SS21 George Young, 3rd WS10 Oliver Ayles.Sunday's racing returned to the normal format of three heats and a final, followed by open races for the men's and ladies' Joe Challis trophies. This weekend also included Champion of champion races for both men and lady racers.
In Class 1, James Taylor (WS241) took the early lead, but quickly lost it to Jason Saunders (WS11). Behind them, Hayden Cox (E101) settled in to third, and these three drew away from the rest of the field, with James challenging Jason the entire race.
Classes 3, 5 and 7 raced together, starting on one light. Although the early lead went to the Class 7 car of Paul Bennett (SN274), Neil Daniels (WS19) charged past to take the win in his Class 5, ahead of Jon Napier (WS26, Class 5) and Ian Fay (WS5, Class 3).
Classes 8 and 9 also raced together, again with one light. The Class 9 cars of Allan Tovey (SS18) and Martin Gaylard (WS9) raced at the front of the field, with Martin overtaking Allan to take the win overall. Ian Stott (WS56) was the leading Class 8, ahead of Terry Phillips (NR3) and Derek Dyke (WS30).
In Class 2, Lee Cox (E10) took the early lead, but Ryan Napier (WS81) was not about to let him get away easily. The two raced side-by-side for an entire lap before Ryan was forced to settle for second, ahead of the charging Alistair Hall (A35).
Classes 4 and 6 also ran as a combined race, starting on one light. Nick Cleal in his Class 6 SS4 car pulled out a lead over Roger Lillington (SS5). Stuart Taylor borrowed Mark Hoppé's Class 4 car, WS4, to head Dave Blackman (WS29) in the race.Class 10 was a popular class this weekend, although quite a few fell by the wayside during the day. Tony Tanswell (WS25) charged into the lead from the start, but was quickly caught by Chris Ellis (SS6). Following Chris's example, Ken Page (R177) and Shaun Wheeler (WS202) moved up through the order.
The Juniors put on some excellent racing, with Leon Parnell (SS22) challenging Scott Atkins (SS40) for the lead. Sarah Trott (A550) picked up the gauntlet when Marcus Cole (A222) retired with a puncture, but unfortunately she was unable to catch the leading two cars. The Junior B final finished with Antony King (WS176) and Oliver Ayles (WS300) crossing the line together, and they were awarded a joint win.
All lady drivers raced together, with unfortunately no Class 1 cars coming out for the final. Dawn Leake (NR6, class 2) had to make way for Vicky Hatch (WS81) and the Class 4 of Claire Blackman (WS29), but managed to hold Lisa Fay (WS500) behind her.
Full results were:
Class 1: 1st WS11 Jason Saunders, 2nd WS241 James Taylor, 3rd E101 Hayden Cox.

Wessex Motor Racing Club Spring Meeting, 28 and 29 May 2006
This meeting was unfortunately cancelled due to a waterlogged track
Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting of 14th May 2006
By Keryn CollinsThis was the first of only two possible qualifying sessions for the Men's National Championships, so competition was fierce.
Class 1 was stopped following a rollover by Darren Parkin (SS32). On the re-run, Jason Saunders (WS11) took the lead until severe pressure from James Taylor (WS241) ended in a collision, and a puncture for Jason. Dougie Atkins (SS40) then moved into the lead, but problems sent him back down the field, where he finished the race in third place. James Taylor took over the lead, and Kevin Saunders (SS69), brother of Jason, took second.
There was a lot of action in Class 3, with places being swapped regularly throughout the race. Wayne Thresher (SS67) managed to avoid most of the action by diving into the lead from the start, but behind him, Ian Fay (WS5) spun himself out of second place which was taken up by Adrian Joyce (WS22). Adrian later picked up a puncture, and Ian overtook visiting driver Hugh King (E214) to finish in second. Hugh took third place.
A good field of Class 5 cars ended with only three surviving to the final chequer, with Neil Daniels (WS19) heading the field from the green light. Behind him a flurry of activity ended with Jon Napier (WS26) taking second ahead of Jeff Grist (S171D).
The Class 7 cars raced with Class 4, as there were only two of them out today. Mike Collins (WS61) made a storming start, arriving at the first corner first, but had to give way to the twin-engine power of John Gay (SS7), who took over the lead of the race overall.
Class 9 ended with only three cars making the finish, but all drivers were close together, and throughout the race it could have gone to any of them. However, Allan Tovey (SS18) took the early lead, with Stuart Taylor (WS21) managing to hold off the charging Martin Gaylard (WS9) for second.
In class 2, although Gary James (SS147) took the early lead, he was passed in short order by Craig Tovey (SS23), with Chris Tudgay (WS15) settling into third. However, Chris was given no opportunity to relax, with Nathan Nicholls (SS16) making a very aggressive overtaking manoeuvre which resulted in a warning flag being given to him. The leading three cars then stretched away from the battle for fourth behind them, between Ryan Napier (WS81), Chris Tudgay and Dieter Dehmel (SS99).
Class 4 raced with Class 7, as there were only three of them. Mark Hoppé (WS4) had to hold off the mini pickup of Dave Blackman (WS29), while Ray Tudgay (WS23) brought up the rear.
Roger Lillington (SS5) proved best of the rest in Class 6, taking the win in spite of pressure from Nick Cleal (SS4). Further down the field, Adrian Kinchen (WS31) took third place.
In Class 8, Russ Shepherd (SS3) managed to hold off relative novice Dan Hasker (WS8) to take the win, while Ian Stott (WS56) had a close finish for third place ahead of Graham Orchard (WS94).
Keith Matthews (SS8) proved the class of the field in Class 10, taking the win ahead of Chris Ellis (SS6), while Tony Tanswell (WS25) took third place.
The Junior race showed some excellent driving, particularly as the track was watered in front of them. Antony King (WS76) dived into the lead, but as he had clearly jumped the start, he was docked two places. Behind him on the track, George Young (SS21) and Leon Parnell (SS22) were locked in battle, but finished in that order. The leading three cars were well ahead of the rest of the field.
There were two separate races for lady drivers, one for those in unmodified cars, and one for modified cars. The unmodified race was won overall by Vicky Hatch (WS81) in the Class 2 car, but the sole remaining Class 1 car was driven by Jo Moore (SS69). Louise Tudgay (WS15) was second in Class 2, with Hayley Curtis (WS215) in third.
In the modified race, Claire Blackman (WS29) took the lead on the staggered start, but had to pull out with damaged steering. Keryn Collins (WS61) took over the lead, ahead of Helen Richards (SS8) and Lisa Fay (WS500).
Full results were:
Class 1: 1st WS241 James Taylor, 2nd SS69 Kevin Saunders, 3rd SS40 Dougie Atkins
