The Southern League put on an extra, end-of-season meeting
to give the drivers some fun, and it was held at South Somerset's
Henstridge track. Those of us who arrived early on Saturday had
to run the gauntlet of the man in the control tower, who did his
best to stop us getting in, but we racers weren't about to be
controlled by any fly-boy!
We got through the racing fairly quickly to get it all finished
just before the rain came in, and we were successful in doing
that. Because there weren't that many survivors left at the end
of the season, various classes were amalgamated.
Classes 1 and 2 ran separately, with Class 1 taking three attempts
to come to a conclusion, and not quite managing the full distance
at the third attempt. The first three places went to Vernon Wallis,
John Dexter and George Hobbs.
Usual winners were at the front of Class 2, with the first three
stretching away from the rest of the field. Phil Northover took
the win from Keith Channon, with Andy Wallbridge close behind
for third.
Classes 3, 7, 8 and 9 ended up running together in the final,
with the specials not quite reaching the head of the field after
a staggered start. Winning the race overall was Adrian Joyce,
hotly pursued by both Allan Tovey and Ian Fay in the class 3 cars;
Ralph Bartlett made a rare appearance in his Class 7, and Ian
Stott managed to stay in front of the Class 9 car of Graham Orchard.
Similarly, Classes 4, 5 and 6 ran together, with a battle at the
head of the field for the overall win between Nick Cleal and Neil
Daniels, ultimately resolving in Nick's favour. The rest of the
pack spread out behind them. John Best was slightly more experienced
at driving in Class 4 to take the win over Paul Routley. Neil
Daniels stretched away from the front-wheel drive car of Kevin
Saunders, who was followed by Jenny Proctor, first time back on
grass since leaving Formula Ford. Adrian Kinchen was second in
Class 6, stretching away from Ken Grist.
The juniors' race was a close contest between Darren Parkin, Ryan
Bennett and Sara Routley, with the rest of the pack spreading
out behind them. An excellent result.
The ladies all ended up racing together, with the Class 2 car
of Heather Northover the only survivor in the class. Maureen Wallis
took the lead from Keryn Collins, who lost the battle with Heather
for second overall in the race by about a foot (30 cm!) on the
line, and Yvonne Best finished third in Class 1.
The full results were:
Class 1: 1st SS12 Vernon Wallis, 2nd WS40 John Dexter, 3rd
SS101 George Hobbs

Congratulations to Mike for his two heat wins - shame about the final!
And that was it before the rain came down. Thank you to everyone
who helped out and supported this meeting.
Our last meeting of the year, and it was on, in spite of the
petrol crisis. This possibly contributed to a shortage of drivers,
but those who were there were able (as long as their cars kept
going!) to get plenty of racing in, with several Open races as
well as the normal racing.
Onto the results then, and in Class 1 Vernon Wallis was unusually
at the rear of the field, having problems with his car. The win
went to Craig Tovey with the remaining trophies being taken by
Brian Jennings and John Simmonds. The Class 1 B final was won
by Justin Hardy, second place going to Roy Butler and third place
being taken by Terry MacDonald, who'd won his car for the day
in our prize draw. We hope he enjoyed himself - as far as I could
see, he certainly did!
In Class 2, Keith Channon and Mark Hoppé drew away from
the battle for third place. Stuart Clamp had a hard time holding
off Phill Northover, but managed to keep his nose in front to
take the third place trophy.
Classes 3 and 7 ran together, with the win in Class 3 going to
Adrian Joyce, Ian Fay in his new car coming second, and Roly Collett
taking third. Kraig Murley won Class 7, with the under-powered
car of Tony Ascott in second.
Paul Routley made his debut in Class 4 this weekend, with the
Mini pickup formerly owned by Mark Balsom. Paul ran with Class
5, which was won by Neil Daniels, also in a new car. Pete Saunders
chased hard for second place, with third place going to son Kevin
Saunders.
Class 6 was won by Nick Cleal, with Adrian Kinchen taking advantage
of Ray Wyeth's car breaking down to take second, and John Cutts
taking the remaining trophy.
Very few specials this weekend, so they all ran together. Ian
Stott was the only survivor in Class 8 after Philip Cornhill's
car lost a wheel, and Graham Orchard and Tony Tanswell were the
only other runners in classes 9 and 10 respectively.
The juniors race was won by Chris Tudgay, coming back into form
and holding off Daniel Nicholls, with Ryan Bennett taking a good
third place.
Onto the ladies, and due to several cars coming to grief, all
the ladies ended up running together. In Class 1, Maureen Wallis
transferred into Justin Hardy's car to take the win. Guest driver
Pippa Tucker had a tussle with Emily Old before chasing Maureen
hard but had to settle for second. Heather Northover took the
win in Class 2, with Christine Atkins taking second, and Jacqueline
Clamp came third.

And that's it for this season from Weymouth Motor Racing Club. Thank you to all the drivers who've visited us over the year and to everyone who supported us for this meeting. Thanks also to everyone who's provided any help, and special thanks to Barry Parkin for getting sponsorship for the trophies this weekend, and also thank you to any of the sponsors who may see this report.
I would also like to say a personal thank you to Kevin and Pete Saunders for allowing me to borrow WS91 when my own WS161 came to grief. I enjoyed myself a lot - bit faster than my car!
The South Wales League put on a very well run event, and the racing was excellent. Sadly, we didn't get a lot of luck this year, and in spite of some hard work, none of our drivers reached the final. Nearest to do so was Pete Saunders who came 11th overall, missing the final by one point. Pete was unlucky to get the water in front of him for both heats on Saturday, but a drier track on Sunday allowed him to put a real challenge onto Ryan Griffiths, although he eventually had to settle for second place - twice, after the race was re-run.
Kraig Murley used up all his luck in his first race to take a good win after a steady drive. Spinning out in the second race left him chasing up to fifth place, but cruel luck deprived him of even a chance of getting to the final when his CV joint sheared off on the start of the third heat, causing Kraig to make a dramatic spin on the startline.
Ian Fay found the conditions not to his liking and couldn't get his car to slide out the way he wanted. However, he mastered the track and took his best finish in the third heat to come second.
Shaun Brown's seventh place in his third race deprived him of a place in the final, with second and third places in his first two races not giving him enough points to qualify.
Dan Hasker was one of our first-timers at the Nationals this year, with his best heat being the second one where he took fifth place. Dan's main achievement at the Nationals was to pass Vernon Wallis, which was one of his ambitions for the year! Another first-timer was Stuart Taylor in the Class 9 special, whose best result was fifth in the first heat. In the second heat, Stuart had worked his way up to third when his steering linkage broke, and he was unable to score any more points during the weekend.
Some excellent driving from Andy Bedwell, another new driver at the Nationals, saw him take fourth, sixth and his best result all weekend, second, in his third heat. Jo Ford also put in some excellent racing, holding off the men, to take sixth place in her first heat, and then fourth in the next two heats.
Congratulations to Ray Wyeth and Nick Cleal, who were the only Southern League finalists. They each took wins in the heats, but during the final, in spite of some hard battling, neither could get into the trophy positions.
Other South Somerset representatives were Vernon Wallis, Justin
Hardy, Keith Channon and Philip Cornhill, all of whom did their
best, but were also out of luck this weekend.
Plenty of good racing today, mostly thanks to the visitors we
had this weekend. We really appreciated their presence, which
contributed to some excellent racing.
Onto the results, and once again Vernon Wallis was in the lead
in the re-run of Class 1, chased by Paul Booth and Michael Gale.
The "B" final was also run twice, after Paul Routley
turned his car over. Justin Hardy was spun out just before the
last lap but given the win after the perpetrator received the
black flag.
Enough Class 2 cars for two runs today, and Mark Hoppé took the win away from Les Reynolds, leaving Phill Northover to settle for third. Five runners entered the "B" final, with Dawn Hannant taking a steady win after the other drivers took themselves out in two separate collisions.
Class 3 suffered from carnage also, mostly due to breakdowns,
leaving Steve Garrett the sole survivor. Another small field of
Class 7 meant they raced with Class 3. Kraig Murley was the winner
of both class 7 and the race overall, his puncture allowing Ian
Fay to close up on him but not quite catch him.
Class 5 was another class suffering from breakdowns, but Pete
Saunders worked hard for his win, with Matthew Howell splitting
up father and son Kevin Saunders. Class 6 had the disadvantage
of water going down in front of them, which caused mayhem into
the first corner, and resulted in the field being well spread
out after that. Darran Taylor took the win, with Jason Taylor
coming second in his first outing this year, and Adrian Kinchen
taking third place.
Onto Class 8, which was a well supported race today, with the
win going to Justin Warren, chased by Adrian Stevens and Philip
Cornhill surviving to take third. Dave Smith took the win in Class
9, chased by Chris Ellis and Stuart Taylor. Adrian Herbert was
the sole survivor in Class 10 and ran with Class 9.
Some quick cars out in the Juniors today, with Daniel Nicholls
extending a lead over Carl Smith, and brother Nathan Nicholls
taking third place. The "B" final was won by Robin Best
in a good race.
It was like old times among the ladies Class 1, with Jane Baynton
losing out after a bad start. The win went to Maureen Wallis who
was chased by Keryn Collins, and Yvonne Best fought Jane off to
take third.
All the remaining ladies ended up running together, with Class
2 going to Karen Reynolds from Heather Northover, Sarah Levics
winning Class 5, Lindsay Pitman taking Class 6, and Jacqueline
Clamp taking Class 7. Donna Smith was the winning Specials driver,
holding off the lesser powered car of Catherine McMilan.

Thank you to all our visitors who came this weekend; hopefully you enjoyed your racing and we'll see you again. Also, thanks to everyone who helped to re-arrange the pits and parking areas at short notice, and all the visiting drivers who were so co-operative that evening. Your assistance was greatly appreciated.
Our next meeting on this track will be the 20th August for
the South of England Championships. We look forward to seeing
everyone again then. In the meantime, best of luck to all our
qualifiers for the Men's National Championships.
For this meeting, we had lengthened the track, and I think everyone was happy about it. It is now about Nationals size, which allows for bringing the track in when required. Same as last year, the surface is now going down hard, and was even laying rubber on the corners this weekend. Makes for some fast racing!
Thank you to our visitors who came this weekend. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will come back again. It was a pleasure to see you.
Onto the racing then and in Class 1, Vernon Wallis was out of luck on the re-run, being pushed wide on the first corner, and then getting stuck behind the ailing George Hobbs. This allowed Justin Hardy to take the win, chased by Paul Booth and Mark Nicholls. The "B" final was started three times, and was eventually won by Mike Collins.
Plenty of cars also in Class 2, but the winner of the day was Keith Channon, who had a long lead over second-placed man, Andrew Giles. Chasing him in third was Derek May. Class 3 was rather small, consisting of three cars, but nevertheless it was a very competitive race, with Roly Collett taking another win, chased by Brian May and Allan Tovey. Kraig Murley's Class 7 also ran with them and won the race overall. Ian Fay broke the suspension on his Class 7 early in the first heat and that was his racing over.
Class 5 brought grief to Jo Ford, who I hear has broken her gearbox. Hope she can get it repaired in time for the Nationals. Pete Saunders was again the winner at the end of the day, although John Weeks gave him a run for his money, leaving Kevin Saunders to settle for third. Class 6 was also a bit short of cars, with some of them presumably saving their cars for the Nationals. Adrian Kinchen inherited the lead from Andy Bedwell when he broke down, and made the most of it. John Cutts and Ken Grist (who was back after his mammoth cycle ride from Land's End to John o'Groats) took the remaining prizes.
Sadly short of specials today, and some of the ones that started the day suffered mechanical problems, including Martin Gaylard, Ian Stott and Philip Cornhill. This allowed Merv Lister to take the Class 8 win, with Graham Orchard winning Class 9 from Stuart Taylor.
Onto the Juniors, which saw Trevor Ford take the win again, chased hard by Ryan Bennett and Nathan Nicholls.
The Ladies Class 1 race was won by Maureen Wallis, with second place going to Jacqueline Clamp after Melanine Goodenough and I collided. Melanine recovered to finish in third. In Class 2, Heather Northover was setting the pace, closely followed by Sheryl May, and Sarah Conroy's car survived the weekend to allow her to take third place.
Four cars for the modified race, comprising two in Class 12 and two in Class 13. Dawn Leake swapped cars again to win Class 12, with Virginia Nichols taking second place. Liz Stowe was out in the big V8 Rover Class 3 to win from Jacqueline Clamp's Class 7.

And that was it for another weekend. Our next meeting on this
track will be on 23rd July. An extra race date has been added
in August, which will be the 20th of August for the South of England
Championships and Joe Challis Memorial. We look forward to seeing
everyone again, and especially thanks to our visitors. See you
next time.
First of all, apologies to Graham
Orchard for leaving him out of the results last time. You just
can't get the staff these days!
Onto racing, and this time, the grass was much shorter (on the
track at least) and the water splash had gone down. I don't think
anyone went in this weekend, although a few people (including
me!) got a bit close. For our next meeting, the track will be
lengthened, as we're taking the fence out to the hedge, so hopefully
the racing will be faster. Having said that, the standard of racing
was excellent, and thanks to our visiting drivers for making it
so much better - you certainly provided some exciting racing.
None more so than in the Class 1, which saw Vernon Wallis being
put under strong pressure from John Simmons and Paul Booth. These
three pulled out a fair lead over the rest of the pack. The "B"
final was even more exciting, with a tremendous battle between
Dean Watts and Michael Gale, eventually resolving itself in that
order. They were well ahead of the rest, and both deserved the
trophies they got.
Keith Channon was the winner of Class 2, in a race that was fairly
well spread out. Andy Wallbridge and Mark Hoppé took the
remaining trophies.
Classes 3 and 7 ran together, and Kraig Murley was the overall
race winner and winner of Class 7. In Class 3, Roly Collett was
the winner, holding off a strong challenge by Adrian Joyce. Allan
Tovey (Class 3) battled with the Class 7 car of Ian Fay.
The solitary Class 4 car of Ross Fisher raced with the Class 6s
and was still very competitive against them. The Class 6 winner
was Ray Wyeth, and he was chased by Giles Maber and John Cutts.
Pete Saunders was again the winner of Class 5, holding off a challenge
by his son, Kevin, and Jo Ford.
Onto the Specials, and sadly, due to the amount of breakages,
they ended up all racing together. Ian Stott was the winner of
Class 8, followed by Merv Lister. Martin Gaylard was the overall
winner and winner of Class 9, with Stuart Taylor second in Class
9, and Tony Tanswell the winner of Class 10.
The Juniors settled down to put on a good final, which was won
by Chris Tudgay, pursued by Darren Parkin and Trev Ford. The junior
"B" final was won by Robin Best.
Jane Baynton was racing again in ladies Class 1, leaving Maureen
Wallis and Yvonne Best to take the remaining trophies. Among the
Class 1 cars was the Class 1A car of Emily Old - this class is
specific to the Southern League this year and is for a standard
1000 cc car of any make. Emily finished the race in spite of oil
pouring over her wing! Vanessa Chubb took the win in Class 2,
with Heather Northover watching from the infield. Dawn Leake won
Class 5, and Jacqueline Clamp had an easy win in Class 7, with
Keryn Collins breaking down with gearbox/driveshaft problems.
Full results were:
Class 1: 1st SS12 Vernon Wallis, 2nd SS102 John Simmons, 3rd PAC18
Paul Booth.
Class 1 'B' final: 1st BS87 Dean Watts, 2nd PAC110 Michael Gale.
Class 2: 1st SS26 Keith Channon, 2nd SS71 Andy Wallbridge, 3rd WS351 Mark Hoppé.
Class 3: 1st WS627 Roly Collett, 2nd WS22 Adrian Joyce, 3rd SS18 Allan Tovey.
Class 4: 1st P7 Ross Fisher.
Class 5: 1st WS1 Pete Saunders, 2nd WS91 Kevin Saunders, 3rd WS484 Jo Ford.

Class 8: 1st WS56 Ian Stott, 2nd WS733 Merv Lister.
Class 9: 1st WS9 Martin Gaylard, 2nd WS221 Stuart Taylor.
Class 10: 1st WS25 Tony Tanswell.

And that was it for another weekend.
Next time out, (2nd July) we are going to try to run three heats
(rather than two) and a final, to see if we can get more racing
in. And it'll be a bigger track as well.
Thanks to all our visitors who came to support us, and also to everyone who helped. Look forward to seeing you in July.
Before I get into the racing, I'd like to send congratulations to Emma and Neil Daniels on the safe arrival of Kieran George (8 lb 11oz) on the evening of Sunday 14th May. This was why Neil wasn't racing - got to get your priorities right! Thanks to Ray Wyeth for passing that on to me.
Prize for the most spectacular dash through the watersplash goes to Kraig Murley, whose bow-wave was nearly as high as the car. I think he was the only person to go in who came out under his own steam, too.
Onto racing, and in Class 1 Vernon Wallis was of course the winner, pursued by Craig Tovey, now making his mark among the seniors, and Ray Tudgay. I enjoyed the B final more, with a hot battle between visitor Michael Gale and Timothy Davies, and an exciting (to me) charge from the back by Mike Collins to challenge John Dexter for third.
Andy Wallbridge brought the fence down in Class 2; on the re-run Keith Channon split the race up when he spun, allowing Andy Giles, Stirling Winter and Phil Northover to pull out a long lead over the rest.
Adrian Joyce charged straight into the lead in Class 3; Shaun Brown put himself down to third when he grazed the fence and later spun. This allowed Roly Collett to take second, with a fine drive.
In Class 5, Pete Saunders was in the lead again, hotly pursued by Jo Ford. Brian Jennings also got past Kevin Saunders to take third place.
Onto Class 6, and visiting driver Karl Andrews stormed into the lead, winning by a fair distance. Andy Bedwell and Giles Maber had a little battle of their own further back. Ray Wyeth tells me he enjoyed himself, which is good news, so we'll see him out there again.
In Class 7, Stuart Clamp took the car out for a test drive then retired. Ian Fay was the eas
