WMRC - Meeting held 18 August 2002
This was our last meeting of the year, as we need to have some work done on the track to make it even better next year. Considering how much rain we'd had previously, there were fears that the track would be too wet, but by the weekend it was dry and showing the benefit of all the work that has been carried out on it. Thanks to everyone who did the work.
It was great to see quite a few visitors, and even better that, for once, there were plenty of lady drivers and even enough enthusiasm left for a ladies open race at the end of the day. Thank you to everyone who came and raced with us - it contributed to some excellent racing.
And onto the racing, then. In Class 1, early jostling resolved in favour of Vernon Wallis, Michael Gale and Chris Tudgay who pulled out a lead over the rest of the field. Classes 3 and 7 ran together, on a watered track, which caught out new Class 7 driver Steve Winter, who found the conditions a bit testing. Keith Channon pulled out his usual lead over the rest of the field, with Jon Napier trying so hard he nearly hit the fence. In Class 7, Kraig Murley chased hard but was unable to catch Keith Channon.
In Class 5, Neil Daniels put his car in front and pulled away from the battle for second place between Matthew Howell and Jenny Bartlett, which resolved in Matthew's favour on the last lap. In Class 9, James Candy and Stuart Taylor left behind the struggling pair of Chris Ellis, with an intermittent misfire, and Martin Gaylard, with a puncture.
Class 2 had to be re-run, but early struggles resolved in favour of Craig Tovey who was chased hard by Mark Hoppé and Gary James. In Class 4, Paul Routley was the only contender, and he raced with the Class 6 cars. On a dry track, Nick Cleal powered his way to a win chased by Ray Wyeth and Allan Tovey. Classes 8 and 10 also ran together, with Dave Atkins winning Class 8 and the race overall, while the Class 10 cars of Tony Tanswell and Ian Whiffin mixed in with Ian Stott and Adrian Malling.
The Junior race had to be stopped when two cars piled into the same corner where there was already a car parked, which gave the win to Kevin Herbert from Jason Saunders. Daniel Sharp took third place.
Enough lady drivers today for an unmodified and a modified race, which was great news. Out in front of the unmodified race was Maureen Wallis, followed by Sue Herbert and Laura Atyeo, all in Class 1 cars. In the modified race, Jane Baynton (Class 9) overcame the stagger to take the win, followed by Ginny Nicholls (Class 5) and Keryn Collins (Class 7).
These races were followed by open races, including the highlight of the day, the Nick Sturmey Memorial Trophy, which attracted many entrants to the qualifying heats. The final was won by Craig Tovey.

WMRC - Meeting held 21 July 2002
Thanks to the hard work put in by a few people (I won't name names in case I accidentally miss someone out and cause offence - but you know who you are!), the track is now going down smooth and hard after the early season rain. It is fast, but overtaking is still possible, as displayed in the very competitive, close racing we enjoyed this weekend.
Class 1 had to be re-run after a bottom corner collision, but then the three leading cars traded places before settling in the order of Pete Saunders, Justin Hardy and Vernon Wallis. Classes 3 and 7 ran together, with Keith Channon winning the race overall, and John Gay unable to make up enough ground from the staggered start. It was interesting to watch the fight between Jon Napier and Ian Fay, who ended up behind his old car! Class 5 saw Jenny Bartlett unsuccessfully challenging Neil Daniels for the win, but managing to hold off Kevin Saunders in some excellent racing. The leading three cars in Class 9 were well out in front of the rest of the runners, with Mark Hall dropping down the order behind first Martin Gaylard and subsequently Stuart Taylor on the last lap.
Craig Tovey led Class 2 from start to finish, with Mark Hoppé recovering from a bad start to take second after making his way up from the middle of the pack. Sam Brice was unfortunately the only Class 4 runner, but ran with Class 6 and held his own among them very well. An early battle in Class 6 was eventually resolved in favour of Nick Cleal, with Allan Tovey coming off worst after a collision with Adrian Kinchen. Ian Stott caused the race to stop in Class 8 after suffering a massive rollover during a close battle with Dave Atkins - after he'd taken the car home for repairs! Dave Atkins lost out on the re-run, being unable to take the lead from Bruce Candy. Class 10 ran with Class 8, with Tony Tanswell the clear leader in his class.
Jason Saunders was the usual winner in the junior class, strolling away from the battle behind him between Damien Jennings and Ross Newman.
All the ladies ran together, with Maureen Wallis romping away in the lead. Emily Old held off a challenge from Class 2 first-timer Mandy Peters, while Jacqueline Clamp, in the borrowed Kraig Murley Peugeot-Rover V8, made her way up to third overall.

Wessex Midsummer Open, Two-Day Meeting, 29th and 30th June
Saturday, 29th June
Unfortunately Saturday's meeting was not as well supported as it could have been, but it turned out very well, so if you missed it - your bad luck! Being the only lady driver, I signed on for the men's open racing, and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
With a scarcity of cars, we ran to Mark Hoppé's Knockout Trophy format, which worked very well. All races were a minimum of 6 laps, so everyone got plenty of track time, which was much appreciated. Grids of approximately eight cars of varied classes were lined up round the track and the top four went into the winners next round, and the remaining cars went into the losers next round. Mike and I were sharing a car, so to try to keep the car cool, I went for the losers second round, in spite of finishing in the top 4, which worked pretty well for me!
The final of the winners round showed how well the stagger had been worked out, with three specials (Stuart Taylor, Ian Stott and Dave Atkins) crossing the line almost together with an unmodified car. Similarly in the losers round, I caught the Class 1A car of Steve Baggs just before the line, but the Class 2 cars of Ryan Napier and Jo Moore were well away.
The Knockout Trophy was interspersed with junior racing, and it was good to see some unfamiliar names getting trophies. More open racing included a Men's Open race which was won by Kraig Murley after his car's latest modification, plus a devil's eliminator race, which was won by Ian Stott. Kraig was awarded the driver of the day trophy for his superb performance in the Open.
Many thanks must go to all those who marshalled and helped us out during the day, and hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. It was very relaxed and a lot of fun, and who knows, we may repeat it some time.

Sunday 30th June
A few more cars here today, including quite a few visitors. By the time of the finals, the work that had been done on the track made it go down really hard and fast, giving some good racing.
In Class 1, WS1 Pete Saunders was having a bad day, which allowed Vernon Wallis (SS12) to take the win from Justin Hardy (SS1) in a close race.
Classes 3 and 7 suffered from mechanical damage, leaving just four cars surviving to the final which was won overall by Kraig Murley (WS45) in Class 7, in a really quick race.
Class 5 was one of the star races of the weekend, with Jenny Bartlett (SS220) leading from the lights until the last lap flag, but unfortunately she was then overwhelmed by Barrie Staite (NS32) and severely pressured by Neil Daniels (WS19).
Class 9 was slightly anticlimactic after that, with James Candy (WS16) taking an easy win over the misfiring car of Martin Gaylard (WS9) who came under increasing pressure from Stuart Taylor (WS221).
Class 2 was a very hot and hectic race, with any of the top five finishers having a chance to win, but Mark Hoppé (WS4) was there at the chequered flag, chased by Craig Tovey (SS23) and Paul Regan (SV19).
In Class 4, WS441 Sam Brice came under a great deal of pressure from Steve Herbert (NR20), with WS222 Simon Murray coming third in his first weekend of driving the car.
Class 6 was won by Ray Wyeth (SS19) just holding off Allan Tovey (SS18) on the line, followed by Adrian Kinchen (WS31).
Classes 8 and 10 ran together, with the win going to Dave Atkins (BS81) in Class 8 from Bruce Candy (WS18) and Adrian Malling in WS259. Tony Tanswell (WS25) held off Howard Duckworth (S6D) to take the win in Class 10.
The Juniors' race suffered from stoppages with cars going into the fence but Jason Saunders (WS1) was the clear winner, well out in the lead.
As usual all the ladies ran together, with Sue Herbert (NR20) winning the race overall and the ladies modified race. Maureen Wallis (SS12) took the win in the unmodified race.
Full results were:

Report of meeting held 19th May
By Keryn CollinsThis meeting was muddy at the start, and unfortunately had to be abandoned before the finals due to the difficulties drivers were experiencing, plus the threat of bad weather coming in. Nonetheless, it provided quite a bit of entertainment, and it was unusual to see drivers looking for the outside line, rather than the inside. Apart from one sticky patch, the track stood up to racing very well, and some fast racing was still possible. Trophies were awarded on points gained through the heats.
Class 1 cars and juniors seemed to be the worst affected, with some of them getting very bogged down. Pete Saunders coped very well with the conditions; unfortunately son Jason in the juniors was less fortunate, and, sadly, has now lost his unbeaten run. In Class 3, Ian Fay was again revelling in the conditions and showed everyone else the way round. Rear wheel drive was again popular in Class 5, with Trevor Tanner, Neil Daniels and Jenny Bartlett taking the leading places from the Minis. Kraig Murley in Class 7 kept his car reliable, and took two wins. Martin Gaylard is master of all conditions, taking the Class 9 win from Chris Ellis and Stuart Taylor.
Another driver able to handle most conditions is Mark Hoppé in Class 2, taking the win from Dieter Dehmel and Darren Parkin. Only one class 4 today, so Paul Routley raced with Class 5. Among Class 6, Ray Wyeth suffered from a driver who did not drive to the conditions, and damaged the rear of his car. This allowed Allan Tovey and Adrian Kinchen to take the trophies. Class 8 was won by Adrian Malling from Ian Stott. Class 10 was won by Keith Matthews, from Tony Tanswell and Ian Whiffin.
Not many ladies out today, but Louise Tudgay in Class 1 braved the mud to take the win from Maureen Wallis. Leisl de la Fontaine took the Class 2 win. A good tussle between Class 7 drivers Keryn Collins and Jacqueline Clamp in the first heat was unfortunately not repeatable in the second after Jacqueline's car was damaged in the men's race.

Results of Meeting held on 12 May 2002
by Keryn CollinsThis was our first race meeting as Wessex Motor Racing Club, and it was one of the best. Many thanks must go to our Western Centre neighbours who did their qualifying today, and put on some really great racing for us.
Onto the results then, and we had some excellent races. A watered track caused some slippery conditions for the first few classes, especially Class 1, but it led to several changes of leader before Craig Rodford took the win, chased hard by Michael Gale and Pete Saunders. Class 3 saw probably the best race of the day, which was won by Ian Fay, who came off the line last and stormed round the dry outside line to take the win. Keith Channon and Andrew Hughes took the remaining trophies.
Mini-based Class 5s were dominant this weekend, with Martin Honeybun romping into the distance, with Keith Ford and Kevin Saunders battling hard behind him. John Gay was the winner in Class 7, chased by Mark Hoppé. Mike Collins took the third place trophy. In Class 9, Martin Gaylard had a battle for the win from Ken Cope and James Candy.
Inspired by his drive in Class 7, Mark Hoppé took his own Class 2 car to a win, hotly chased by Craig Tovey and Rob Davies. Unfortunately this race was curtailed when Phil Badman rolled his car - he has the dubious honour of being the first rollover on a Wessex track! In Class 4, Paul Routley took the win from Ian Fraser and Pete Murray, in spite of running into mechanical problems on the last lap. In Class 6, Ray Wyeth took over the lead when Nick Cleal broke down, while behind him Adrian Kinchen had a real battle with Allan Tovey, just managing to hold him off.
Classes 8 and 10 ran together, but the Class 8 win was hotly disputed before it settled in favour of Dave Atkins from Phil Goodenough and Ian Stott. In Class 10, the win went to Keith Matthews, closely followed by Tony Tanswell.
Onto the Juniors, and once again it was Jason Saunders in the lead. So far this season he is unbeaten - how long can this continue?
Enough lady drivers for unmodified and modified races today, which was good to see. Unfortunately only three Class 1s survived to the final, which resulted in a win for Kimberley Cope from Melanie Goodenough and Emily Old. The modified race was run on a stagger, and the overall winner was the Class 9 of Jane Baynton, followed by Ginny Nicholls in a Class 5 and Diane Goodenough in a Class 8.Class 1: 1st WS444 Craig Rodford, 2nd PAC110 Michael Gale, 3rd WS1 Pete Saunders
