Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting held on 19th June 2005
By Keryn CollinsThis meeting was the last of the qualifying sessions for the Men's National Championships, and there was a good turnout of drivers, all hoping to qualify. Once again we had a good show of visitors, and thank you very much for your support, especially given the very hot weather. The track seems to be growing faster every weekend, with the level of available grip varying with each weekend, making it a constant challenge. We did manage to have some excellent racing, which was more than Formula 1 did in the USA!
In Class 1, Jason Saunders (WS1) took to the front on the first corner, and from then on was unchallenged, stretching away from the rest of the pack. Dougie Atkins (SS40) wrestled second place from Vernon Wallis (SS12), after which the cars spread out round the track.
A good grid of Class 3 cars was reduced to two for the final, racing with the Class 7 cars of John Gay (SS7) and Mike Collins (WS61). Adrian Joyce (WS22) and Ian Fay (WS5) fought it out for the win, but eventually were caught and passed by John Gay. Mike Collins dropped behind after catching a loose tyre under the car.
The Class 5 race was the most competitive race of the day, with the early lead going to Jenny Bartlett in SS220. Jonathan Griffiths (A27) overtook her then spun himself down the pack. Jenny re-took the lead only to be passed by her husband Ralph (SS20), followed by Neil Daniels (WS19) and Jon Napier (WS86). In a last corner charge, Neil stormed into the lead, taking Jon on behind him. Excellent race.
Dave Atkins (SS15) was the sole surviving Class 8 car after an incident earlier in the day took out some of the others, so he raced his final with the Classes 9 and 10 cars. Paul Smith (NR2) took the early lead, leaving Martin Gaylard (WS9) to hassle Stuart Taylor (WS221) for second, with Tony Tanswell (WS25) and Dave Atkins being the only other runners.
In Class 2, Craig Tovey (SS23) took the early lead, chased all the way by Daniel Watts in SS88. Ryan Napier (WS81) was in close pursuit to take the third place.
The solitary Class 4 car of Mark Hoppé (WS4) ran with Class 6, but did not finish the race due to a wheel coming off the car, after a brake disc broke. Among the Class 6 cars, Nick Cleal (SS4) was the master, taking the win from Roger Lillington (SS5) and Jonathan Meggitt (SS60).
The Juniors' race took three attempts to reach a conclusion, and resulted in a win for Chris Green (SS74), fending off Jacob North (A666) throughout the race. Leon Parnell (SS22) took the third place.
The Ladies' final was run in conjunction with the Joe Challis Ladies' Cup, with all runners staggered round the track. This was another very good race, with Jo Moore (SS69) the best of the Class 1 runners, leading from Clarissa Dallinger (SS32) and Emily Old (WS46). Retirements included Dawn Hannant (SS15) and Louise Tudgay (WS81). Lisa Fay (WS5) made her way through the slower cars, but the battle was at the front of the race, where Jane Baynton (WS9) charged hard to catch Keryn Collins (WS61), but missed the win by a coat of paint.
This was followed by an Open Race, in which John Gay took the win, with one of Paul Smith's engines going up in smoke just after the finish line. Ryan Napier held off the remaining challengers to take second.

Wessex Motor Racing Club Spring Meeting, 29 and 30 May 2005
Report by Keryn Collins
This year we returned to the Bank Holiday two-day format, and must send out a huge thank you to all the visitors who supported us, and those who not only raced with us but also helped with marshalling and other tasks. We all very much appreciate your assistance, and it also allowed for excellent racing.
29 May
There were some good fields of race cars during the day, but unfortunately some of them ended up being amalgamated due to mechanical breakdowns. One class that suffered considerably in the final was Class 1, which ended up being run three times, with only about half of the field surviving to the finish. On the final run, Jason Saunders (WS1) was lying third from Doug Atkins (SS40) and Paul Booth (PAC18), and fending off Darren Parkin (SS32) until he ended up wide on the corner. This pushed him down the field.
Class Three saw its main action being Ian Fay (WS5) chasing down Lee Rowley (SS11) but not quite managing to pass him. Class 9 had its own race at the start of the day, but by the end only Stuart Taylor (WS221) was still running, so he raced with Class 8. These cars ended up well spaced around the track, with visiting drivers Keith Beard (G64D) and Terry Phillips (R17) ahead of local man Graham Orchard (WS94).
Class 4 raced with Class 6, with Mark Hoppé (WS4) being very competitive against the higher powered cars. Unfortunately I didn't see the Juniors final or the Class 2 final due to getting ready to race - if there's anyone out there who would like to help me with these classes it would be much appreciated. However, Jacob North (WS666) held off SS140 Jim Winchester and A222 Marcus Cole in the Junior race, and Craig Tovey (SS23) won from fellow clubmates Wayne Thresher (SS67) and Daniel Watts (SS88). In Class 10, Chris Ellis (SS6) held off Keith Matthews (SS8) for the win, while Tony Tanswell (WS25) stormed home in third.
The ladies all ended up racing together, with Dawn Hannant (SS40) showing the way to Clarissa Dallinger (SS32). Jax Clamp (SN80) made a return to Class 1 racing worthwhile by picking up third place. The sole surviving, but sick-sounding modified car of Keryn Collins made it to the end of the race.
However, the race of the day has to go to the Class 5 race. This was originally a Class 5 and 7 combined race, but Roger Matthews (C90) was unable to make the re-run, and John Gay (SS7) opted not to race after arriving on the startline. The Class 5 cars more than made up for the lack of higher powered cars by showing tremendous competition, with at one point four cars abreast on the corner. The leading three cars battled it out all the way to the finish line - great racing!

The great thing about today was seeing so many lady drivers signed on! There was a full grid of unmodified cars, and I can't remember the last time there were so many. Sadly, it didn't last for the whole day, but I hope the ladies who went out for the first time this weekend enjoyed themselves, and will come out and do it again. One of the ladies was also assisting in a first aid capacity, and my personal thanks go to her colleagues after my accident. Unfortunately the ladies' final was cut short when Jo Ridout (WS888) was nudged off the racing line and had a close encounter with the armco. This ended the battle between her and Vicky Hatch (WS81) in their Class 2 cars. However, the win was taken by Jax Clamp (SN80), leading from the early stages of the race, while Jo Moore in the borrowed WS1 slipped past the battling WS46 Emily Old and SS40 Claire Atkins. Lisa Fay (WS5) was the only runner in a modified car.
In Class 1, Jason Saunders (WS1) took an early lead over his father Pete in the borrowed SS69. Pete held off Keith Westlake (SS79) until he suffered mechanical breakdown and this allowed A99 Paul Conbeer to move up into third place. Class 3 saw the only three surviving cars well spaced out around the track, and there was a similar pattern in the Class 4 and 5 combined final.
The Junior final saw newcomer to the sport Anthony King (WS76) taking the early lead, but having to fend off SS74 Chris Green for the whole race. Class 2 saw Ryan Napier (WS81) fending off his leading position from Wayne Thresher (SS67) the whole race, and in the later stages Keith Channon (SS26) came to join in as well. The Class 6 final saw Nick Cleal (SS4) taking an early lead and stretching away from the other runners. The rarely seen Ray Wyeth (SS19) took an easy second place. Ron Garrett (B169H) was the unchallenged winner of Class 8, followed by R17 Terry Phillips, but the main action was behind them as NR8 Adrian Malling held off WS94 Graham Orchard for third place.
The race of the day this time has to go to the Class 9 and 10 combined final. Martin Gaylard (WS9) streaked away into the lead, but the real action was behind him as Paul Smith (NR2) and Keith Matthews (SS8) battled it out the whole race, and finished so close together on the line that only a coat of paint separated them.
Today also saw the Joe Challis Open, with a good three-way finish between the Napier brothers and Paul Smith, plus the Champion of Champions race, open to the leading cars from both days, in which Mark Hoppé managed a relatively comfortable win.

Wessex Motor Racing Club - Meeting of 15th May 2005
By Keryn CollinsIt's good to announce that Wessex Motor Racing Club is back on its old track - back to long straights, and a hard, fast surface that allows for good overtaking. If you want plenty of racing, this is the place to come, with three heats, finals and open racing.
The Class 1 cars set the standard with WS241 James Taylor taking an early lead, chased hard by SS40 Doug Atkins until he hit some tyres that had been pulled out by another car. This dropped him well down the field. Classes 3 and 7 ran together, with John Gay (SS7) catching WS5 Ian Fay on the line. Classes 4 and 5 also ran together, with only Mark Hoppé (WS4) making the finish line in Class 4. He put a hard charge on SS220 Jenny Bartlett, who was having her own battle with Jon Napier in WS86.
The specials all had their own races, and Class 9 had only two finishers in the final. S14D Nigel Candy took over the lead after Martin Gaylard retired in WS9. Stuart Taylor recovered from an early mistake in WS221 to put in a hard charge on Nigel, but was unable to take the lead.
Apologies to the Class 2s and Juniors as I didn't see your finals, due to getting ready for my own race. However, I saw some of Class 6 from my startline, and that was a great race, with the lead chopping and changing amongst the top three finishers. Class 8 I also missed as it happened while I got out of my car, but Class 10 was really tough until Paul Smith spun out in NR2, leaving SS6 Chris Ellis to fend off Keith Matthews in SS8.
The ladies' final was unfortunately without Jane Baynton, after Martin broke the car in his final. The Class 13 cars of Keryn Collins (WS61) and Lisa Fay (WS5) were held on a stagger while the Class 11 cars got away, but Keryn worked through the field to take the overall lead a lap from the end. Jo Moore (SS69) took the win in Class 11.
