The Southern League Open

Sunday 29th August

We had a rather soggy track to race on this weekend after a torrential thunderstorm during the week, but it was still raceable and with decent weather dried out reasonably well. Some of the finals were nearly as good as we saw in the BAS round.
Class 1 was very hotly contested between Brian Herridge (B100H), Michael Gale (A110) and Richard Wallis (SS12) with all three swapping places. Class 2 was somewhat hectic with the race being stopped twice due to pile-ups, but the win ended up with Roger Lillington (SS55), followed by Mervyn Dunn (B77H) and a dead-heat between Keith Channon (SS26) and Kevin Feiven (WS4) for third.
Bill Beaney in MK315 took the win in Class 3, with second going to Adrian Joyce (WS22) and Allan Tovey (SS18) profiting from the black flag given to Wayne Thresher (SS67). Class 4 was won by Phil Olsson (B227H) from Mark Balsom (WS28) who ran with the Class 6 cars of Nick Cleal (SS0) and Jason Taylor (WS21).
Pete Saunders (WS1) demoted Tim Fry (SS88) from first in Class 5, and Tim later lost second to Steve Herbert in NR20. Class 7 win went to Stuart Clamp in WS3 during a rather physical race, with Kraig Murley having to settle for second in WS45 and Phil Bennett third in IW274. Classes 8 and 10 ran together, with Class 8 being won by Les Prior (P11). Close to him was Pete Fry in the Class 10 SS90. Ron Garrett (B169H) was second in Class 8 followed by Phil Goodenough (BS7), while Fred Jupe (IW11) was second in Class 10. Gary Wetherick (IW3) led from the start in Class 9 with Chris Ellis (SS6) taking second and IW131 Chris Lee third.
The Juniors racing was excellent and ended in a win for James Clements (IW110), followed by Craig Tovey (SS23) and Jack Payton (BS128).
Maureen Wallis had a clear win in Class 1 in SS125, followed by Tracey Nicholls (SS17) and Yvonne Best (SS31). Sharon Dunn (B77H) and Jo Norman (SS24) had a fight for the win, with Christine Atkins in third in WS36. Class 4 was won by Lyn Olsson (B227H); a similarly uncontested win went to Jacqueline Clamp in Class 6 (WS51). Sue Herbert (NR20) won Class 5 from Jo Ford in WS484. Gill Garrett won Class 8 in B169H from Bev Candy who was driving WS11 for a change. Michelle Williams was the sole runner in Class 10 in SS90.

Monday 30th August
On Monday it was as you were in Class 1 with the same people - Brian Herridge, Michael Gale and Richard Wallis - fighting for the trophies. Class 2 was less of a problem than yesterday and became a bit processional behind Roger Lillington (SS55). Phill Northover (WS30) was unsuccessful in his challenge on BS88 Daniel Watts for second. Class 3 was also slightly processional, with MK315 Bill Beaney winning again from James Poltimore (SS75) and Allan Tovey (SS18).
Classes 4 and 6 ran together again, and Phil Olsson (B227H) kept Mark Balsom (WS28) at bay. Ian Fraser had to settle for third in Class 4. Keith Best took the win in Class 6 in SS11, leaving Jason Taylor (WS21) in second. In Class 5, Pete Saunders (WS1) took the lead from Clive Wareham in NR1 before stretching away. Paul Salter in E55 was successful in his challenge for second. Class 7 was won by Stuart Clamp (WS3) after a steady drive, holding off Bruce Burge (IW104) and Ian Fay (WS5).
Classes 8 and 10 ran together with Fred Jupe (IW11) being the sole runner in Class 10. He was pursued by Ron Garrett in B169H, while Doug Atkins (WS11) fought hard attempting to take second place away from S3D Steve Dowling. Gary Wetherick ended up winning Class 9, after the lead swapped between himself and Graham Orchard (WS94). Chris Lee (IW131) took third.
Some more very good Junior racing, with James Clements (IW110) again stretching out a lead, with Daniel Nicholls (SS17) picking up a puncture just before the finish line. John Simmonds took the third place trophy.
Maureen Wallis (SS125) was unable to hold off Claire Griffiths in B100H and had to settle for second in Ladies Class 1. Tracey Nicholls in SS17 was third. Heather Northover (WS30) romped to victory in Class 2, leaving the rest to fight it out between them. Second ended up with IW29 Teresa Day, with third going to Sharon Dunn (B77H).
The modified cars all ran together, as before. Lyn Olsson again had an uncontested win in B227H in Class 4, while Jo Ford (WS484) was the sole runner in Class 5. Diane Goodenough (BS7) won Class 8 from Gill Garrett in B169H.

BAS

WEYMOUTH MOTOR RACING CLUB - 18th July 1999

Our last meeting before the BAS round, on a slightly different track. Racing was as hot and hectic as ever, and even though the fences were moved out, people still kept hitting them!
In Class 1, Vernon Wallis had an easy win over Athelstan's Michael Wiltshire, who in turn was well ahead of Norton Radstock driver, John Weeks. The B final was very close between Justin Hardy, Dan Haskell and Robert Pritchard. Roger Lillington was the easy winner in Class 2, with Andy Elliott and Keith Channon coming through the pack to take the remaining trophies.
Classes 3 and 7 ran together in an excellent final, with Allan Tovey taking the win in Class 3 over Roly Collett. Kraig Murley won the race overall in his Class 7, leaving Ian Fay to settle for second. Classes 5 and 6 also ran together, with Pete Saunders' Class 5 car taking the win overall, with Neil Daniels and Kevin Saunders chasing. Class 6 saw Jason Taylor holding off Ian Pitman.
The specials all ran together in an exciting race, with Dave Atkins holding off son Doug and Colin Pitt to win the Class 8 section. Chris Ellis got the better of James Candy and Graham Orchard in Class 9, and Tony Tanswell was the sole survivor in Class 10.
Amongst the juniors it was business as usual, with Craig Tovey again the leading driver, hotly pursued by Daniel Nicholls and John Simmonds.
Not many ladies today, so they all ran together. Jacqueline Clamp had a very easy win over the unusually slow car of Maureen Wallis and Tracey Nicholls retired with a rattling engine. Heather Northover was first time out today in Class 2, and Jo Ford won the race overall in her Class 5 car.

WEYMOUTH MOTOR RACING CLUB - 4th July 1999

At last I've had a chance to try out this track for myself, and it's pretty big, folks. We are now working to make it even better for the BAS round, so all of you in electronic-land can look forward to a good time.
Class 1 saw the usual people at the front on the re-run, except the Athelstan cars broke down, allowing Andy Walbridge some deserved success. In Class 2, Phill Northover continues to improve in the Fiesta, and is challenging the others quite hard now; however, Kevin Feiven is still the front runner. Class 3 started with four runners, and ended in Henry Poltimore being the only survivor. Class 7 cars ran with Class 3, and Kraig Murley had to be towed off the track with a wheel missing and bent shock absorber. Ian Fay continued his storming victory over Ken Grist.
The sole Class 4 car of Mark Balsom came to grief while he was chasing the Class 6 cars hard, ending in a heavy rollover. Thankfully he wasn't hurt. In Class 5, Pete Saunders was out in front, being chased by Neil Daniels and Trevor Tanner. He was also chased by the re-run Class 6 cars of Nick Cleal and Stuart Clamp, but only Stuart survived to the finish.
Among the specials, Dave Atkins once again proved his dominance in Class 8, while in Class 9, Martin Gaylard brought his car home in first place, followed by James Candy and Graham Orchard. In Class 10, Pete Fry was the winner over Tony Tanswell and Mark Hoppé.
The Junior final was stopped before the end of the race - as far as I know it was won by Craig Tovey, with Matthew Barber and Chris Tudgay taking the other trophies. I'm sure Matthew will let me know if I'm wrong!
In Ladies Class 1, after a contretemps, Maureen Wallis emerged the victor, with me in second, and Tracey Nicholls in third. Bev Candy's luck ran out in the modified race when she had a puncture, but Jane Baynton built on her success in West Wales to take the win over Michelle Williams. Jo Ford was the lone runner in the saloon section.

Full results were:
Class 1: 1st SS1 Justin Hardy, 2nd SS12 Vernon Wallis, 3rd SS71 Andy Walbridge.

Weymouth Motor Racing Club, 20th June 1999

Back at Bearley once again, and a reasonably quiet meeting. Quite a few visitors, which was great to see. There were enough Class 1 cars to make up 3 grids, but once again Vernon Wallis was leading the pack, leaving our Athelstan visitors in his trail. In Class 2, Roger Lillington was again showing the way, but Phil Northover is getting used to the front-wheel drive WS30 and was in among the trophies.
Class 3 started with enough cars to have their own race, but dwindled down to 2 cars for the final (shared with Class 7), of which only Adrian Joyce finished. A similar story in Class 7, with again, only 2 cars surviving to the final, which was won by Kraig Murley. Ken Grist brought up the rear.
Class 4 had only one runner, but this time it was Steve Hargreave after some time away from racing. He ran with Class 6, which was won by Stuart Clamp, chased by Ian Pitman. Class 5 had their own race, which was won by Steve Herbert, leaving the rest of the cars in his wake. Kevin Saunders kept the pressure on, followed by Brian Jennings.
All the Specials ran together, but in the end it came down to 2 cars, namely the Class 8 of Colin Pitt, and the Class 9 of Graham Orchard.
The Juniors keep on coming, and there were plenty of them, which was good to see. Craig Tovey and John Simmons kept up their usual battle, but this time they were headed by Daniel Nicholls.
Among the ladies, Maureen Wallis continued her dominance, even though she had a strong challenge from Jacqueline Clamp. Jo Ford took herself out of the running, leaving Jackie Brunsden in the Class 4 car to chase Sue Herbert's Class 5 car.

Full results were:
Class 1: 1st SS125 Vernon Wallis, 2nd A17 Paul Booth, 3rd A110 Michael Gale. Class 1B Final: 1st BS87 Dean Watts, 2nd SS16 Matt Nicholls, 3rd BS15 Neil Porter.

WEYMOUTH 2-DAY MEETING, 2-3 MAY 1999

2 May 1999 - Joe Challis Memorial
There was hot and hectic racing in the heats, so we could expect more in the finals, and we got it. Class 1 took three attempts before there was a result, with Bredon Hill's Brian Herridge (B100H) taking the honours again as he had in his heats. Stroud's James Middleton (S60D) held off the improved SS12 car of Vernon Wallis.

Class 2 took two runs to declare a winner, which was SS55, Roger Lillington, after a bit of a tussle at the front. Lee Corbett (B20H) battled through the field to take second, with Neil Thomas (E155) having to settle for third. No surprises that Class 3 also took two runs for a result. The win this time went to SS70 Henry Poltimore, with WS8 Shaun Brown having to fight his way to second, with WS22 Adrian Joyce hanging onto third.

Class 4 was an easy win for Mark Balsom in WS28 being the only runner all weekend. He had a variety of cars to race with, being with the Class 6s on Sunday, and Class 5 on Monday. Onto Class 5 and this one was another two-run race. The men certainly had their money's-worth. NR1 Clive Wareham was the winner here, chased by WS1 Pete Saunders, with NR200 Tim Gore taking third.

Class 6 only had one run, with E13 Steve Simms the winner, closely challenged by SS0 Nick Cleal, with WS51 Stuart Clamp in third place. Kraig Murley borrowed a Class 6 Nova to come fourth as his own Class 7 car had broken down - yet again. Class 7 reduced down to 3 runners, with S20D Steve Smith and SS205 John Fry fighting it out for the first place, leaving Ken Grist in WS52 settling for third.

Onto the Specials and Class 8 was a straight run through. Ian Phipps in S12D managed to hang onto the lead in spite of a heavily smoking engine, with S22D Martin Anns unable to quite catch him. BS7 Phil Goodenough took third place. Class 9 took two runs, with S21D Dave Smith storming into the lead. Gavin Pitman in WS18 had to fight his way up to second, with S11D John Phipps being one of the survivors to take third. Class 10 was an easy win for R333 Nigel Biggs, leaving YS5 Adrian Herbert to settle for second, and E202 Peter Boit in third.

In the Juniors Class, John Simmons in SS102 put in a successful challenge on early race leader SS23 Craig Tovey, with WS23 Chris Tudgay and S121D Carl Smith benefitting from a collision between SS23 Craig Tovey and SS110 James Pritchard to take the remaining trophies.

Onto the Ladies, and in Class 1 Maureen was proving her usual invincible self in SS12, with WS50 Jacqueline Clamp her only challenger. In Class 2, Shirley Thomas in E155 was unbeatable, with main challenger PAC21 Karen Reynolds settling for second, and B77H Sharon Dunn taking third. Classes 12 and 13 ran together, with Jo Ford in WS484 setting the pace in Class 12, and NS300 Julie Brown taking second, while S40D Rhiannon Smith was the sole survivor of Class 13. Quite a few cars out in Class 14 for a change, but Katie Phipps in a change of car was easily the leader, with S21D Donna Smith taking second, and BS7 Diane Goodenough in third. Liz Stowe in S2D was the first of the Class 10 Specials.

Full results were:
Class 1: 1st B100H Brian Herridge, 2nd S60D James Middleton, 3rd SS12 Vernon Wallis.

Class 2: 1st SS55 Roger Lillington, 2nd B20H Lee Corbett, 3rd E155 Neil Thomas.

Ladies Class 10: 1st S2D Liz Stowe.
Men's Champion of Champions: S20D Steve Smith.

3 May - South of England Championships
Back to Class 1, and this time we had a straight run through, with Brian Herridge (B100H) storming to an early lead and staying there. The other cars chopped and changed places resulting in second for Paul Booth (A17) and third for S80D Matt Middleton. Class 2 was also a straight run, with Roger Lillington in SS55 having to fight for first place then romping away once he got there. B20H Lee Corbett put in a challenge on PAC21 Les Reynolds for second, but was unable to make it stick.

Class 3 went to a re-run after a false start, but E666 Robert Hollway dived into the lead and stayed there. Shaun Brown in WS8 put in a big effort from the outside but couldn't catch him, with SS70 Henry Poltimore in third. Class 4 was another straight win for WS28 Mark Balsom, racing with Class 5 today. Class 5 turned into a father-son battle between WS1 Pete Saunders and son Kevin in WS91. It was resolved in Pete's favour as he left Kevin to fight off Brian Jennings in WS70.
Class 6 turned into a battle of the survivors with Stuart Clamp in WS51 only just managing to crawl over the line, with E13 Steve Simms taking second. In Class 7, Ian Fay returned with a repaired car but had to settle for second behind S20D Steve Smith, with WS52 Ken Grist taking third.

Onto the Specials, and after a lot of chaos and confusion the Class 8s eventually had a result in favour of Dave Atkins in IW70, with S44D Matthew Bath in second, and Ian Stott surviving to take third place in WS56. Class 9 also became a battle of the survivors with Gavin Pitman in WS18 finally taking the honours, followed by YS36 Keith Embling and E141 Roger Bown struggling to cross the line. Class 10 turned into a 2-car fight between YS5 Adrian Herbert and E202 Peter Boit, finally finishing in that order, with R333 Nigel Biggs having to settle for third.

The Juniors also went to a re-run after SS17 Daniel Nicholls was pushed into the in-field. On the re-run, S60D Aaron Middleton took an early lead, leaving SS102 John Simmons and SS23 Craig Tovey chopping and changing for second, and finally finishing in that order.

Onto the Ladies, and in the Class 1 minis Maureen Wallis in SS12 continued her unbeaten record, leaving WS50 Jacqueline Clamp and SS17 Tracey Nicholls to take the remaining trophies. In the Class 2 cars, Shirley Thomas was again the winner in E155, with PAC21 Karen Reynolds and B77H taking the same positions as Sunday.
Classes 12 and 14 ran together as there was a severe shortage of cars by now, leaving Jo Ford in WS484 to take the win in Class 12 over Jackie Brunsden (WS162) and Bev Candy (WS16) the sole runner in Class 14.

WMRC Meeting held on 4 April 1999

Our first meeting on our new track, and already the circuit is proving to be FAST! It is going to improve as time goes on, so by the time of the BAS round in August, it should be more than ready.
Racing was hot and furious as we have come to expect at our meetings, but there were several casualties suffering from teething problems with new cars/engines and so on. Hopefully most of these will soon be sorted out.
Big news is that the Duckhams cars in Class 1 were unusually far down the field, allowing Athelstan visitors to take some of the honours. Elsewhere it was business as usual for Roger Lillington and Shaun Brown. Pete Saunders proved that he can still challenge on the race-track, and Nick Cleal is leading the way with the Nova. Among the specials, James Candy has thrown down the gauntlet, and Ian Stott's car is also setting the pace.
In the Juniors, experience counted with Craig Tovey taking the win, while Maureen Wallis is still proving hard to beat in the Class 1 Minis. Jo Ford was unchallenged in the Class 12.
